What LASIK does

LASIK surgery uses a cool ultraviolet laser (called an excimer laser) to correct the shape of the cornea. This is the front surface of our eye, through which light rays pass on their way to the retina. They pass through the lens behind the cornea and form a tiny image on the retina, which is transmitted to the brain by the optic nerve.

Imperfect corneal shape

When the cornea is not perfectly shaped, the light rays bend at the wrong angle. Then they don?t focus on the retina but in front of it or behind it. This creates near- and far-sightedness respectively.

And when the cornea has little irregularities in its shape, the light rays come to the retina out of focus in certain areas, so that our vision has blurriness in different parts.

LASIK uses the excimer laser to vaporize tiny pieces of corneal tissue, so as to correct the corneal shape and surface. Then the light rays focus sharply on the retina and we see clearly.

Corneal flap

Before directing the laser beam on to the cornea to reshape it, Dr. Khanna cuts a tiny flap on the corneal surface and bends it back to expose underlying tissue. The laser works on that tissue and the flap is replaced, where it heals itself in a few days.

Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK

If your corneas are too thin or too flat, LASIK is not a good answer.

Corneas too thin

In LASIK, the little flap is cut with a device called a microkeratome. If your corneas are too thin, Dr. Khanna may not be able to cut a good flap.

* In cutting it as thin as he can, he may inadvertently form it with a hole in it, so that some of what should be folded-back flap is still part of the cornea and will block the laser
* Alternatively, he may by mistake detach it altogether rather than folding it back. Then it may not heal as well.
* Or he may cut it too small in diameter for the laser to have enough area to work on.

Corneas too flat

The purpose of LASIK surgery is to remove tiny pieces of corneal tissue to improve vision. But if the cornea is too flat, removing more tissue will make it even flatter, and this won?t improve vision. So people with extra flat corneas are not good candidates for LASIK surgery.

LASEK (E-LASIK)

LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) uses a different tool to create the tiny flap. It?s called a trephine and has an even finer blade.

* Dr. Khanna uses the trephine to partly create the flap
* Then he covers the eye with a mild alcohol solution for a half-minute or so to loosen the flap?s edges
* Finally, he uses a tiny hoe-like tool to lift the flap?s edges and fold it back out of the way

The LASEK procedure is then like traditional LASIK, using the excimer laser to remodel corneal tissue, and the flap is carefully replaced.

The flap usually heals in a day or two, and you may feel some eye irritation during this time. Many patients wear a ?bandage? contact lens that holds the flap in place while it heals but also allows oxygen to flow to the eye tissue. After a week or so you?ll have your new vision. This is a longer time than after LASIK, when the results are immediately noticeable.

Epi-LASIK

In Epi-LASIK, the small flap is cut and excimer laser used to vaporize excess corneal tissue, as in LASIK and LASEK. But in Epi-LASIK, a plastic, oscillating blade is used to create the flap, rather than the microkeratome or the finer-bladed trephine.

And instead of using an alcohol solution to loosen the flap?s edges before lifting it back, a very fine plastic blade is used, called an epithelial separator. Why?

Because in some cases, the alcohol solution can cause epithelial cells to die. An epithelium is a surface membrane, so in this context, it refers to the surface cells on the cornea. The eye must grow more epithelial cells around the flap?s edges to reintegrate it with the rest of the corneal surface.

Epi-LASIK results

As with LASEK, vision improvement occurs more slowly than it does after LASIK. For some, it?s evident after 3 or 4 days, and for others it may not be evident for 3 or 4 months.

But before Epi-LASIK, people with thin corneas were not able to have laser vision correction. Now they often can.

When I was involved, I mainly pushed the life insurance because I know most of us don’t have it. It’s very important, we never know, things happen! I just recently had a close family friend pass with no life insurance; it’s still a strain on the family now, just from the funeral expenses!

Where can I buy a 35 x 50 x 20 bearing? My trailblazer is in pieces!

I also noticed some play in the water pump, up and down. Is this a sign of going bad? The bearing didn't make any noise and felt smooth when turned by hand... Should I replace it?

I eneded up cleaning out the old grease and repacking with new, sealed it up and reinstalled. Sounds much better than before but it still has a little whine to it. We'll see how long it lasts.....Just trying to save 500.00 for the new compressor + labor (which I don't need). This really pisses me off!

I did replace the water pump, thermostat, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and belt since it was apart.... With 88,000 on them, I guess it's better to replace before it's too late.

Hey Zubius, I had the same problem last summer (just before a 2k trip). I would normally fix that myself, but because of time constraints, I opted for the replacement compressor (around $900 can installed). Was it a lot of work? The manual suggests the compressor should come out the top of the engine (removing the alternator and other things). I looked at taking it out from the bottom and fixing it under the car (not disconnect the plumbing). What was your method?

Here's my method........
Once I got the clutch and snap ring off I had to use a puller to get the pulley off. Then beat the bearing out, with gentle whacks of course Total time was about 6 hours, including the water pump and thermostat replacement. If I find a new bearing I'll be doing this again soon

Corinna Kneuer, born in Racine, Wisconsin, is best known by her stage name Cory Everson, an American female bodybuilding champion, actress and model.

During a competitive career that spanned the 1980s, Cory Everson was the prime force in women’s bodybuilding – both in terms of contest results and as a spokesperson for presenting the sport to a wider public. Cory won an unprecedented six Ms. Olympia titles from 1984 through 1989. The Ms. Olympia world title is the highest and most prestigious honor in professional bodybuilding competition. Aside from her six consecutive titles, Cory holds the distinction of being the only woman with an undefeated record in professional bodybuilding competition.

In January 1999, aged 40, Cory was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the Muscle Beach Venice Body Building Hall of Fame on September 5, 2005.

A Little Background

Cory attended Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Illinois, where she was a four-sport star (gymnastics, track & field, badminton, and swimming). She majored in interior design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she also won four Big Ten pentathlon championships.

Shortly after graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Cory became seriously ill with a blood clot in her left leg. Doctors predicted that she would never walk normally again. Nevertheless, Cory worked diligently to regain her strength and eventually captured the Ms. Olympia title on her first attempt.

Trained in commercial design, Cory is an accomplished painter and designer who also enjoys building furniture and creating her own landscapes. Her artistic talents have been showcased on Entertainment Tonight, The Los Angeles Times and People Magazine. An original piece of Cory’s artwork was signed by Mohammad Ali and subsequently auctioned to the highest bidder. The proceeds were donated to the Georgia Council on Child Abuse.

If I owned a business, Employee Tracker would be the first application that I would install to my BlackBerry. The name defines in a straight forward matter exactly what the program does, it tracks important employee information directly from your mobile, lets have a look at this program in detail.

Unfortunately there is no OTA download for the trial edition, in fact there is no trial available. The installation of the program occurs only after you complete the purchase. The software costs USD 12.99 and is available from ExplorePDA. As always, do not forget to check if your handheld and your handhels operating system are supported.

When you install the program to your BlackBerry, you begin by entering pertinent information about your employees. This is not a basic name/surname/contact/personal details entry. You can enter such details as education, skill, assigned projects, works in progress and salary. The salary section is also not the usual payment that goes out of the company’s earnings, but rather in detail covers your emploees income, net pay and deductions. You can also enter as many employees as you like as long as the memory on your handset permits.

Stepping in a little further, the works and projects in progress can also be entered in detail to the program. You can enter the work (I will use the word “work” which covers also the projects and assignments) in detail for an employee such as the client, what the employee is working on, the duration, the environmental variables of the work and detailed description. With this entry, you can also enter the team size for projects and overall job assignments. At this point, I would prefer assigning employees under a project rather than entering the number of people in the team, however, when you select the project you can see the members assigned under the name. You can also get results in a report format covering the past or current projects. A very nice feature in my opinion.

The second step revolves around the employee’s salary. In addition to the cash out of the company, you can view a breakdown of the employees pay including additional income, house rent allowance, any other allowances, taxes, funds, loans, any deductions and base pay. With these items, you can see a quick glance of what you expect to approximately pay for the oncoming months in terms of employee compensation.

The “search” option also needs emphasis. You can type in an employee’s name or any other information and receive quick and accurate results. This feature comes very handy when you begin to lose track of your employees or you need to pull up information quickly without a ton of browsing involved.

Finally, I have a recommendation for the developers. Although the entries are made simple and the program is easy to use, there is no backup option. OK, you can get a complete backup of your system via BlackBerry’s Desktop Manager, but that’s not the point. I am sure the users will look for an application in which they can receive a back up of their personnel data. In addition, I also would like to have a desktop program that I can enter data from the comfort of my computer and work in sync with my BlackBerry. If the developers can go for these two, the program will be unmatched.

The Knights in Satan's Service have always had an approach to their fans that on the one hand could be seen as ridiculously crass and on the other as truly generous. And this release, with its three expertly mastered and crammed DVDs--issued with three separate bonus discs--could easily support either view. The second installment in KISS's Kissology DVD series will sort out the casual fans from the true members of the KISS Army. The material included here, after all, begins in 1978, when the band released four separate solo albums at once and their massive popularity began to wane. It continues on through the controversial makeup-free period and ends in '91, as KISS struggled to cope with the ascendancy of grunge over the hair metal style they'd experienced a second boom with. The concert films are pretty great, but the full-length Tom Snyder Tomorrow show appearance is flat-out brilliant, as is their live performance on the short-lived sketch comedy show Fridays. And the highlight of the set has to be the "European theatrical version" of their made-for-TV film KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. All those who've suffered through poorly degenerated video bootlegs will glory at this wonderfully restored piece of rock and roll camp. --Mike McGonigal

As it says, there will be three different bonus discs like there were for Volume 1. I have the Wal-Mart & regular release bonus discs, but I don't have the Best Buy one from Vol. 1. If anyone here has the Best Buy bonus disc & needs either of the other two, let me know & we can do a trade. I assume they will put the bonus discs for Vol. 2 out the same way as last time. After a grueling audition process, Anneliese was finally chosen to portray Belle in the last days of Disney Theatrical's broadway presentation of Beauty & the Beast after a 13-year run. Her performance as Laurey in the Austin Musical Theatre production of Oklahoma! earned her a Austin Critics Table Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.
